The fact that Truganini is often referred to as the last Aboriginal Tasmanian is demonstrative of when the Australian government considered their colonial project to be nearing completion.

White Europeans had been incorrectly proclaiming the extinction of Tasmania's Aboriginal population for years, even before the death of Truganini. And ever since her death in 1876, Truganini has been referred to as the last Aboriginal Tasmanian, or the last full-blooded Aboriginal Tasmanian but this description is also less than accurate.

While Truganini may have been the last surviving Aboriginal Tasmanian to have lived some of her life among Aboriginal culture and spoken the Tasmanian language, not only does the notion of the last Tasmanian ignore all of the Aboriginal Tasmanian people today, the idea of a "full-blooded" comes from the European and American notions of blood quantum.
