Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj was born on March 30, , in Zereg, Khovd Province, Mongolian People's Republic, to a herder.
Elbegdorj was the youngest of eight children. After graduating from high school in , he planned to study journalism in Ulaanbaatar but was unable to apply that year. Instead, he worked as a repairman and machinist at the Erdenet joint Soviet-Mongolian mining enterprise in Erdenet for about a year.
